“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” – Jesse Owens
What’s your dream?
Each of us has that one dream we’ve always held close to our hearts. While some want to start their own business, others wish to travel the globe. When I was sixteen, my biggest ambition is to finish my college degree and get a stable job to help sustain my family’s needs, and I did. But it was difficult.
To smooth the rough roads of my travel, I followed the five steps below. Even if you have different goals, these may work for you, too:
1. Trust yourself.
Doubt dispels time and energy. Deal with it before you work towards your dream, not after. Doubt is the opposite of willpower and engaging in it will slow down your progress.
2. Take it slow.
Set smaller, more realistic goals for yourself to keep you from feeling overwhelmed. Likewise, this will provide you positive reinforcement and a sense of accomplishment along the way.
3. Commit to your goal.
Every goal presents a challenge. If you’re not committed to success, those challenges may overwhelm you. Committing yourself to your goal will shrink those challenges down, thus, allowing you to climb over them.
4. Defy the tradition.
Don’t refer to what everyone else has done and is doing. Individuals who follow the crowd aren’t the ones who stand out. Remember Steve Jobs and Alan Turing? They are some of the experts who applied their innovative and creative thinking that leave a lasting impact. Mimic their style and find what works for your own strengths, flaws, needs, and goals.
5. Assess your progress.
To reach your target, you must stay on track. Check your progress regularly to make sure you’re still moving in the right direction.
You won’t achieve your dreams overnight. But by making decisions that feed long-term vision for your future now, you’ll witness them come to fruition in no time.
